INTERVIEWMarisol is set to star as the female lead in Steven Bochco’s (creator of NYPD Blue, LA Law, Hill Street Blues) new drama for ABC, Blind Justice. Her co-star Ron Eldard plays a New York detective who, after having lost his sight in the line of duty and sues to get his job back, is partnered with a less than enthusiastic and highly skeptical homicide detective (Marisol), the only female in an all-male precinct. The show will start airing in the new TV season, taking over NYPD Blue’s time slot, Tuesdays at 10:00PM.
She recently wrapped up her recurring role as Detective Valen’s love interest in CBS’s Cold Case just prior to production on Blind Justice, and her two-hour movie Homeland Security recently aired on NBC in which she starred as an FBI counter-terrorism agent alongside Tom Skerritt and Scott Glenn.
After a three year stint starring as Victoria Santiago in the television series Resurrection Blvd., she shot numerous guest starring roles on episodes of Friends, Alias, Nip/Tuck, CSI, Law and Order: SVU and Charmed. Her film credits include Vegas Vacation, Scream 2, Can’t Hardly Wait, and Mafia.
This month, Marisol talks to Celebrity Magazine about the wins and accomplishments she has attained and how Scientology helped her achieve them.
CELEBRITY: How did you get into Scientology?
Marisol: I got in from my chiropractor Dr. Neil Springer.1 He was treating me at the time for every illness under the sun. So then, he said “Listen, I want to take you over to this place and I’d like you to do a course.” I said, “I don’t have time to take a course.” But there was something special about him. He had something. He knew something, and I wanted to find out what it was.
And I was always searching. I was looking for something, really looking, and you name it, I went there and chased it down — dead end. So when I came to Celebrity Centre and walked through the Rose Garden Cafe, Oh my God!
My first course was Overcoming Ups and Downs in Life.2 At the end of the course I spotted that my roommate was constantly invalidating me, but before I couldn’t spot what it was. Meanwhile, I had this big movie out and my face was on Sunset Boulevard, and he said, “Yeah I saw your billboard but your face was kind of small… I was like, ‘Is that Marisol?’ But hey, good job.” So at the end of the course, I kicked him out.
It was like somebody was guiding me.”Look,” it said. “Take a good look, there’s a reason why you don’t feel good around this person.” And the thing that is maddening about certain tone levels is you can’t always spot it. The Overcoming Ups and Downs Course made me spot that scene, so I could then handle it.
How did you decide to do the PTS/SP Course?
I was told that the Overcoming Ups and Downs in Life Course was an introductory course and there is a lot more to learn on the subject. And I said “Ok, great.” The Ethics Tech and PTS/SP Course has been my saving grace. Not only as an artist, but when you are doing well, certain people tend to criticize you or complain. “But I’m doing so well. I’m moving up The Bridge, putting order in… I don’t get it,” I used to think. Through the PTS/SP Course, not only could I spot what was already on my lines and then handle, but I could spot suppressives before they even came in. I mean, I went Tone Scale spotting once, sometimes twice a week for months. Wow! When you really get that tech, you SEE for the first time where certain people really are, what their intentions really are with you, and then you can act accordingly.
What was your experience doing the new checksheet? Did it increase your understanding from the first one you did?
One hundred percent. When you open the pack — Bam! — the Tone Scale3 in your face! That’s what’s so great about it: it’s in your face. You finish the course and it’s like an intensive you just finished. It forces you to confront — really confront — what’s our there. It’s not about theetie-weetie4 feeling good. No, there are good hats and there are bad hats and you have to protect yourself against them. The book Science of Survival was named well.
You recently completed the Ethics Specialist Course, PTS/SP Course and Hubbard Elementary Data Series Evaluators Course. What can you say about this?
Well, you’re not naïve! That’s the best way of explaining it. You’re not naïve. You see things differently. Before, it was just, “What’s going on?” — that was my question. “What’s happening?” Now I know exactly what’s happening.
How has the PTS/SP Course affected your personal life?
I have an amazing group of friends around me that I love. I know what the true definition of a friend is and I have them around me. I had this sort of blind naiveté where I would meet people and immediately start spewing my life out to them. Well, what are they going to do with that communication? If they’re below 2.0 on the Tone Scale, they are going to alter it to worsen — they’re going to hear it worse or only hear bad things and then pass that on.
Well, I have my people and those are the people that I trust. I am happier. I’m not confused by people anymore, because I understand what makes them tick and I understand what I’m really dealing with.
My friends and I, we’re all moving up The Bridge and we’re all trying to live our lives the best we can. The PTS/SP Course has given me the tools to live my life the best that I can. Where, before it was more of a struggle.
Have you noticed a change in your career because of your training?
Definitely. There’s a quote in a lecture about Emergency Conditions, where LRH says Emergency Conditions are made, they don’t just happen. If stars are down, they are being held down. So it’s not real to me that you should struggle„ It’s not part of life.
So now if I’m struggling, I know there’s something going on. I can either apply ethics, I can apply the Data Series tech or I can apply PTS/SP tech to why I am struggling. And Bam! It blows. There is no such thing as struggle. It’s a lie. It’s just not true.
There was a period of time where I was barely working, tons and tons of auditions, very, very few jobs. Then, when I started looking what was in front of me, what was the greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics, and decided to stay friends with people or not stay friend; with them — I haven’t stopped working since. It’s just been Bam! I think I’ve gone maybe three weeks without working since then. That’s pretty unheard of when you’re not on a regular show.
Then the big one was this series that I just booked. It’s called Blind Justice, and I literally just decided on the exact show that I wanted — the exact role, who it would be with, how it should be, etc.
And not only did I get it, it was so quick. Normally you have to jump through hoops to get roles: audition, call back, callback after callback after callback — this was audition, callback, it’s yours. Here ya go. The most A to B it’s been in my whole life. And everything on it has worked out. And that’s the way it should be! A to B.
So how is the set different now compared to before the PTS/SP Course?
[laughs] Let me give you an example. Let’s say the makeup artist comes up and says, “Oh, I heard ‘them’ saying that ‘they’ didn’t like the way this scene came out…” “Well, who did you hear it from?” I ask.
Because you can easily go effect of that — “Oh no, was I in it? Was someone else in it?”
I’m responsible for the whole show, Whether I’m in a scene or not. “Well, who did you hear that from?” I ask, and I start pulling the string. “Well, I heard it from one of the guys on set.” “Well, who?”
So you trace it down and you find out, ok, it’s from this one particular assistant director who happens to be PTS. And he’s downtone. So I know how that guy from his tone level is going to view life, how he’s going to handle truth, what he’s going to do with communication — “Speech Talks/Speech Listens” from Science of Survival – and how he’s going to pass it on. So I can see it’s not true. Not only is it from the wrong source, but what’s that guy going to do with communication, what’s his reality level, etc.
So whenever someone gives me a particular piece of information, I know how they are going to view it. For example, if somebody I know says to me, “Oh, I don’t know if the show is going to be picked up, there’s a lot of factors involved… (worry, worry)” Before, I’d go, “Oh no. It’s not cut and dry. It might not happen…” — no, that’s not true. That person is way below 2.0 on the Tone Scale and I know how they arc going to view life. So I don’t take it as truth.
Now, with the Data Series and the Tone Scale, I know exactly what to do with data.
How does that affect your acting?
Well, I’m keyed out on set. It’s kind of funny. I’m in games5 I’m in create. Having PTS/SP tech, nothing comes in and impinges, so I can act freely. There’s this false datum that you have to be suffering to create. I watch my co-stars or someone do an emotional scene and they get all keyed in. It doesn’t have to be that war That’s not the way it’s supposed to happen. Because I’m exterior and cause over the whole thing, I’m able to reach emotions that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach. I’m able to be that character. You know, the character I play is not exactly the most uptone person in the world, but I have a blast playing her and then I let it go at the end of the day.
And my acting has improved enormously from training, more than anything. I can still go effect of things, don’t get me wrong. I’m not Superman and I do go effect, but maybe for a moment or an hour or two. I still have case, but it doesn’t stick. It goes, fast.
And then ok, that’s done. Next. It’s like that, you know what I mean? Because I have the data.
Has the course improved your ability to make it up The Bridge?
Well, like I mentioned, any time stats are down, they are being held down. If you’re not moving on The Bridge, something is going on in your life taking you away from it. To that degree, you’re under suppression. You’re under counter-intention. Because everyone agrees the best thing to do is go up The Bridge. And if they come up with excuses or “life” comes in to stop — that’s a lie.
So getting suppression or counter-intention off your lines, your intention is clear. You just go. You just move. That’s it. Since PTS/SP I’ve done Pro TRs, Upper Indoc TRs, Data Series, and now I’m getting on OT VI and VII. And I finished PTS/SP a few months ago. Your ability to make things go right improves enormously.
The bottom line is, if you’re not doing everything you want to be doing, there is some counter-intention on your lines. And it might not even be exterior. It might be things you are running on yourself. Self-invalidation is the accumulation of others invalidating you. And then you run that on yourself That’s PTSness. “So there’s no one on my lines — it’s me,” you think. Ok, so take a look at that. It’s still PTS, and “me” isn’t the item. If you’re not moving on The Bridge, you need to do the PTS/SP Course.
LRH says artists are magnets for suppressives. What has been your reality on this datum?
Look, an artist has an ability to change a culture. That is a humongous ability and with it comes humongous responsibility. So to that degree, they’re pretty big beings. What is said in Science of Survival, chapter “Level of Mind Alert,” the aesthetic mind is different than the reactive mind and the analytical mind — it’s a separate mind. To that degree, that mind is huge, right?
So you’ve got a big being, the artist, who can create huge effects. You don’t think little SPs are going to want to grab onto that? C’mon! It’s a magnet. My reality… an artist is this big shiny glowing thing and you get a degraded being6, they see this shining light way up there and they just have to glob onto it.
Understandable, right? Everyone wants to be around theta. Bur, what’s going to happen if they’re lower toned? Yes, they’re going to come uptone around you. So, they want to be around you. At the same time, you are going to go downtone. Per Science of Survival, that’s what he says. So an artist has to know this. He has to know the mechanics of what’s happening. You’re a magnet for the vampire personality. They suck that theta out of you. They just do.
There’s another datum here. It’s from Signs of Success, and it has held true 100% for me. When you really start to win, the squirrels start to scream.7 They really start to scream. When I’m winning and life starts to get a little noisy, I review that reference and I go, “Right! Thanks LRH…. That’s what’s happening.” What I used to do is go off what I was doing to go handle those complainers. Somebody complained, let me go fix that — well, that’s what they are trying to do, get you off of what you’re doing. So no, you spend 2½% of your time on complaints — ignore them. You’re doing good! Keep going. Someone says, “Hey, I just did this huge event, I recovered people onto The Bridge and I can’t believe I’m getting attacked.” Yes, you are, and take the attack as a compliment. You’re winning.
And someone pointed out to me in a new unit of time, “Marisol,” he said, “LRH says, ‘A culture is as great as its dreams, and its dreams are dreamed by artists.'” Right! Well, there is a responsibility that comes along with that, not only in creating huge effects in society, but in speaking out for Scientology. As a Scientologist and as an OT, people look at you as an example.
The OT Levels are the OT Levels, and I’m OT V and getting on OT VI and VII, and along with that it’s been the training that has saved me, 100%. I mean, LRH, says, when it comes to OTs, psychotics go berserk. I mean, he says that. He isn’t kidding. And you gotta have a suit of armor on our there that lets you know what’s happening so you don’t go effect of it. You have to have your lines clean. And you can change society. That was the biggest eye-opener. I can make a difference. I am making a difference. I do do that.
Who do you think should do the course?
Well, let me think… Really, do you want to survive, or nor? It is that simple, whether you’re an artist, a businessman, whether you’re a salesman — whatever. Do you want to survive or not? Do you want your company to survive or not? Because the bigger you get, the more you’re gonna get attacked. You’re gonna get people on your lines, to whatever degree. You’re going to get counter-intention. You have to be able to handle it and continue to flourish and prosper — that’s the most important part. The book is called Science of Survival for a reason. LRH isn’t kidding.
So do you plan on further training?
Absolutely. Look, training is everything. You have to know. You can be audited and feel great, and you handle stuff in auditing that can’t be handled anywhere else. That is very true, and this doesn’t negate that in any way. But you walk out there in life and you go Bam! You get hit, hard, just to the degree that there’s more theta there in you now. You’re more theta and more uptone, so you’re going to get hit harder. So you have to be able to armor yourself against that, know what it is, so you don’t go effect of it.
“Oh, I feel bad.” What’s going on? “Oh, I need a session.” No, not necessarily: You need to get on course. Training is how to live life. It’s The Bridge. It’s telling you this is why this happens. How valuable is that?
We’re so fortunate. My biggest downfall, if you could call it one, is I want to know everything and I want to know it now. So I’m doing the best that I can. To the degree you’re trained, you’re that much stronger. You’re that much more able. People look at you differently because you know something. You don’t just feel good — you know why.
I’m a thousand times more at cause now than when I finished OT V. And that is 100% true, and it is because I got trained. And not only that, the abilities I gained from the OT Levels got even bigger from being trained. That is the truth. I am a bigger being from the training. As an artist, as a Scientologist and as an OT, people look at you and expect life to be going well. Training made that happen.
Is there anything else you would like to say?
There are such things as conditions. And if someone is a good person but they’re in a lower condition, and they are dramatizing a lower condition with you, it doesn’t mean they are an SP. But, they have counter-intention to you and they can affect you in ways you might otherwise not be able to see.
It all boils down to cause. The course isn’t called the PTS/SP Course. No. It’s called the How to Confront and Shatter Suppression…PTS/SP Course. I mean, how to shatter it. So not only are you no longer effect of it, but the key is, you can spot it a mile away.
LRH says know them by their actions. So you have somebody talking to you, talking, talking, talking, talking. Telling you how great they are or how great things are, blah, blah, blah. That Tone Scale tech… you spot them where they are and you don’t listen to what they are saying. You’re looking. And he says (ref: Obnosis and the Tone Scale8) to view what’s in front of you, not what you think should be there, nor what you want to be there and not what the bank dictates should be there, but what is there. And when you do that, you arc seeing life clearer than you ever have before.
The greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics is you as a Scientologist flourishing and prospering. That’s reality. That’s the way it should be. It’s that! What would LRH do? He applied ethics. He applied this tech to his life 100%. What does the tech say?
LRH went through it. He isn’t kidding. Call a spade a spade. If they’re suppressive, they’re suppressive. Two and one half percent is one out of forty. One out of forty people is an SP. They’re not these monsters that are out in society that you don’t run into. It’s the little quiet woman in the corner that’s not saying anything. One out of forty. Confront that! It’s all around you. You gotta get the hatting.
It boils down to confront. One of the greatest references in the world is Complexity and Confront. It says to the degree that something is complex, is to the degree you’re not confronting it. So get your confront up and start.9
